What to take to your theory test

One document decides whether you sit the test at all โ€” bring it, and the rest is easy.

The theory test packing list is refreshingly short. The one thing you genuinely cannot do without is your GB photocard provisional driving licence. Turn up without it โ€” or with a licence that's out of date โ€” and the test centre will not let you sit. You lose your fee and have to rebook, however far you've travelled.

The old-style paper licences have almost entirely disappeared, so it's the valid photocard the staff need to see. If yours is lost, damaged or expired, order a replacement from DVLA in good time before your appointment, because there's no way to sit the test without it on the day.

Beyond that, the job is simply to arrive calm and on time. Aim to get there about fifteen minutes early: that leaves room for the security check-in, a locker for your belongings, and a few quiet minutes to settle your nerves before the screen starts.

What you'll be able to do

  • Understand the three things you legally need to drive โ€” and what each one actually proves.
  • Understand the difference between the types of insurance โ€” and why third-party is the legal minimum.
  • Understand the key dates and duties โ€” when an MOT is due, and when you must tell DVLA things.

The facts that matter

  • Bring your valid GB photocard provisional licence โ€” no exceptions
  • An out-of-date or missing licence means the test is refused and the fee is lost
  • Lost your licence? Order a DVLA replacement well before the test day
  • Arrive around 15 minutes early for security check-in and to settle
  • Phones, watches, bags, notes and earphones must go in a locker
  • Taking a phone or notes into the test room can void your result as cheating

Make it stick

Memory anchors

One card, one job

There's really only one thing to remember: the photocard provisional licence. Put it by your keys the night before. If that single card is in your pocket, you're allowed through the door โ€” everything else the centre provides.

Pockets empty, locker full

The test room is a no-personal-items zone. Picture emptying every pocket into the locker on the way in: phone, watch, notes, earphones, bag. What stays outside can't get you disqualified inside.

Stay sharp

The mistakes everyone makes

Turning up with an expired or wrong document

People assume any ID or an old paper licence will do. It won't โ€” staff need to see a valid photocard provisional licence. Check the expiry date days beforehand, not in the car park, so there's still time to fix a problem.

Keeping your phone on you 'just in case'

Slipping a phone into a pocket rather than the locker feels harmless, but a phone or notes in the test room can be treated as cheating and void your whole result. If it isn't the licence, it goes in the locker.

Cutting the timing too fine

Arriving bang on the appointment time leaves no margin for the security check-in, parking, or a queue at the desk. Aim for roughly fifteen minutes early so you start the test settled rather than flustered.

Out on the road

What this looks like in real life

The licence left on the kitchen table

Sam drove forty minutes to the centre feeling well prepared, then reached the desk and found the photocard still at home. Without it, the staff couldn't let the test go ahead. The fee was gone and a new date had to be booked. The fix costs nothing: the night before, put the licence somewhere you'll physically pick it up โ€” on top of your keys or in your shoe.

The extra support that made the difference

Priya has dyslexia and worried the reading would trip her up. She contacted the centre when booking and arranged extra time and an on-screen voiceover in advance. On the day she used the optional practice session first, got comfortable with the layout, then worked through the questions unhurried. Arranging support early, rather than hoping to sort it on arrival, turned a stressful unknown into a manageable test.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What's the one thing I absolutely must bring?

Your valid GB photocard provisional driving licence. It's the only document you truly can't do without โ€” no licence, no test, and you'll lose your fee and have to rebook.

I've lost my provisional licence โ€” what should I do?

Order a replacement from DVLA as soon as possible, well before your appointment. You can't sit the theory test without your photocard in hand, so don't leave the replacement until the last minute.

Can I take my phone or notes into the test room?

No. Phones, watches, bags, notes and earphones all go in a locker. Taking a phone or notes into the room can be treated as cheating and void your result, so leave everything but your licence outside.

How early should I arrive, and what happens at the start?

Aim for about fifteen minutes early to allow for the security check-in and to settle your nerves. The centre provides all on-screen materials, gives you instructions, and offers an optional practice session before the real test begins.
